NPS submits unique problems to be solved. As its innovation hub, FLEETWERX utilizes its ecosystem and market research to attract best-of-breed submissions to solve those problems. Subsequently, NPS reviews and selects participants with the highest value to satisfy their needs to enter into Agreement negotiations.
The business objective and imperative for successfully accomplishing this project is to improve the quality and accuracy of magnesium modeling software in predicting and preventing segregation defects in magnesium gearbox sand castings. This will be achieved through a collaborative effort between academic and industry partners, and will have a direct impact on multiple Department of Defense (DoD) programs. The ultimate goal is to enhance the overall performance and reliability of magnesium castings, which are critical components in various military applications. By conducting a Design of Experiments (DOE), the project aims to optimize the thermo-physical data and datasets used by the software, resulting in more accurate and reliable predictions of segregation defects. This will not only improve the overall quality of the castings, but also reduce the time and resources required for testing and validation. Ultimately, the successful completion of this project will have a positive impact on the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and competitiveness of DoD programs that rely on magnesium castings.
